Artisanal Pillow Sleeves
Artisanal Pillow Sleeves
The Uros families are an indigenous group living on floating islands made from totora reeds on Lake Titicaca in Peru. The islands are built by the Uros themselves, who have mastered the art of reed construction for centuries, and rely on fishing, bird hunting, and handicrafts for their livelihood.
I have been visiting these families for years and started to support them during the pandemic with an income, by selling their products to an international audience. Due to the big success of this project, I decided to continue this on a small scale and help them promote their products in my travel store.
All products have been woven by eight Uros families, forming their own weaving cooperative, an initiative by Norma, Nelly and Fransisco de Suma Uro. Each piece is 100% handmade, featuring unique hand embroidery traditional motifs. Using a traditional technique with intricate needlework, each pillow sleeve can take 3 to 4 days to complete.
By purchasing these artisanal pillow sleeves directly from these families, you are supporting a sustainable effort and impacting these beautiful people.
